Mini Practical Investigation 1 - Computer Communications and Networking

Computers rarely work alone. Networked computers allow the sharing of resources such as printers, file storage, and the internet.

Aims

This is an introduction to Practical investigative projects and computer networking.

The aims for this unit are outlined in the course specification from page 11

Activity 1 - What is a Network

The school employs a network. What equipment/resources is connected to the schools network? How is it connected? What other equipment could be connected to a network? (200 words)

Research, describe and explain the simmilarities and differences between a 'switch', a 'hub', and a 'router' (200 words)

Research, describe, and explain the simmilarities and differences between copper, fiber-optic, and wireless connectivity for making a network.(200 words)

Describe and explain, with the aid of a diagram what a bus, star, ring, and tree networks are. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Activity 3 - Servers

Learning aims:

What is a web server, what does it do, and how does it work? (200 words)

What is a mail server, and hopw does it work? (200 words)

What types of server would you expect to be in the school?(for help you may need to read pages 122 - 123 of the Computing GCSE book)
